Hi all

I have just watched a segment on a tv show about prebiotics and good gut health
It pointed out how they can help brain and physical health
Taking a supplement was recommended.
Just wondering if anyone is taking a supplement like this?
I am seriously thinking about taking one.
Best wishes.
Hello Valley,

I used to be sceptical of probiotics but am now a convert and dose myself daily with supplements as well guzzling as homemade kefir (probiotic drink) and trying to maximise gut health with prebiotic foods. I firmly believe that a huge part of our health is determined by the wellbeing of the billions of bacteria that reside in our gut and that we need to look after them to the best of our ability.

Hi Jetted

Thanks for getting back to me. What I found really interesting was the emphasis on prebiotics over probiotics. Everything that was said made sense.

I've just started reading Brain Maker - The Power of Microbes to Heal and Protect your Brain - for Life. It's all new to me, but I have to say that I'm riveted!!!
Sorry Valey, I read your post too quickly and had not spotted that you were talking about prebiotics. I agree that it is super important to feed our good bugs. I have just listened to a talk by David Perlmutter on microbiome issues and he mentioned acacia gum as a really good prebiotic that is well tolerated. I've just ordered some and plan to take 10g a day.

As the page below makes clear, it pays to be cautious about launching into large scale consumption of prebiotics, especially if there is a heavy burden of undesirable bacteria (IBS type issues and similar), as prebiotics may feed bacteria indiscriminately and can potentially lead to SIBO and other problems.

The insoluble fibre / resistant starches in root vegetables are apparently also really good for our bugs.

As Cinders rightly says, it's a fascinating topic.

Jette :)

Any brands that seem more beneficial than others?
