Of course this is in layman's words but it now makes perfect sense why stress reduction is so key in managing MS.
Right after my husband's diagnosis we went to a nutritionist. She does functional medicine. She tested him for food sensitivities but also did an adrenal glands stress test and neurotransmiter labs. They were terrible. The joke was how was he still alive.
She explained to us that cortisol and "sex" hormons have the same parent compound/hormone. When you produce too much cortisol the first thing to happen is that the "sex" hormones will decrease in production. if you are under prolonged stress there is a "shortcut" pathway where the parent hormone actually stops making sex hormones and just produces cortisol. This is where he was at with very low levels of the "sex" hormone array and high cortisol.
She gave him supplements that help with restoring adrenal gland's function but key in this process is stress reduction, excersize and adequate sleep.
... and this is where all of it kind'of started to make cohesive sense witht he lifestyle suggestions of OMS and in a way Dr. Swank.
Oh and the diet she wanted to put us on is so similar to OMS... We explained about Sat Fats and made modifications to be OMS safe but another validation for wholefoods plant based diet.
