The joys and dangers of heat
It looks like summer may be finally be here! And Dizzy and I are definitely noticing an increase in temperature. We’ve always loved the summer but since having MS it can be a difficult time.
This is because heat can make MS symptoms extra grumpy! In people with MS, heat can cause nerves, which have already been affected by MS, to conduct electrical signals less efficiently than they may already be. This can lead to a temporary increase in symptoms, such as fatigue and dizziness.
Therefore it is super important to keep cool during the warmer weather, and hopefully enjoy the summer instead of hiding away and hoping it goes away soon (which I have done during one or two of them). With this in mind, Dizzy and I have compiled a list of our top five tips for keeping cool with MS.
1. Drink lots of water
It’s really important to keep hydrated in the warm weather. It is also best to drink regularly throughout the day instead of trying to get your daily amount all in one go.
2. Wear thin clothing
Clothing that is lightweight and lose is best to wear when trying to keep cool. If you also suffer in the cold you can put a light cardigan in your bag to pop on when visiting the super chilly air conditioned shops.
3. Carry a cooling kit
I keep a cooling kit with me all the time (even in the winter!). This can just contain a couple of items that can help to immediately make you cooler. Mine includes cooling spray, a fan and water.
4. Stay in the shade
It’s great being out in the sun but by staying in the shade you can still enjoy the nice weather without getting too hot.
5. Do things to help cool you down
This could mean having an OMS-friendly ice cream during the day (my favorite) or having a cool bath in the evening. This can help relieve any symptoms that may have sprung up during the day. What are you top tips for helping keep cool? Share them in the comments below.
