People with MS should avoid yellow fever vaccination

Vaccinations can be a cause for concern for people with MS; this study shows that yellow fever vaccination can markedly worsen relapse rate

An important case control study from Argentina has shown that people with MS receiving the yellow fever vaccine prior to travel to affected areas had a 12-13 fold increase in the annualised relapse rate compared with pre-vaccination relapse rates. Further, compared with healthy control subjects receiving the yellow fever vaccination, people with MS not receiving the vaccination, and people with MS receiving the flu vaccine, they had widespread increases in blood markers of inflammatory activity.

It may be wise for people with MS to avoid travel to yellow fever prone areas, rather than risk the markedly increased risk of having a relapse around three months after the yellow fever vaccination.
