One of the aims of Overcoming MS has always been to support as many as people as possible to attend a life-changing OMS retreat. We are aware that not everyone that wants to can afford to go, and so, we are pleased to announce a new bursary fund has been established to help bring the opportunity of attending a retreat a reality.
The Yianni for Overcoming MS Bursary Fund has been set up in memory of Yianni, to help those who are under the age of 35 who may not have the financial capacity to attend a retreat.
The bursary fund will pay for up to 80% of the retreat costs, and also, reimburse up to 80% of the travel costs. The bursary scheme is available only to those under 35, living in the UK, who meet the qualifying criteria as set out in the application form. Due to the financial limitations of the bursary fund, bursary places will be limited for each retreat.
"It is wonderful to see Yianni's Bursary go live! What a truly great way to honour Yianni's memory by supporting young people newly diagnosed with MS to access the life-changing information provided in our immersive retreat program. Diane, Yianni's Mum is such a special person."
Gary McMahon, CEO
At the tender age of just 25 years old, Yianni sadly passed away. Having completed his Bachelor’s degree in Law and coming to the end of his Legal Practice Course he was about to embark on his training contract with the global law company DLA Piper. Yianni’s future was promising to say the least. A bright future for a young and handsome man with a passion for windsurfing.
Yianni passed away in April 2016. The fund was started with donations from Yianni's friends when he died. His mother, who is on the OMS program, wants to carry on raising money in his memory for OMS
The Yianni for Overcoming MS Bursary Fund has been created in his memory. The bursary is intended to financially assist those in need, to allow them to attend a life changing OMS retreat.

Details about applying
We aim to have UK retreats each year, although we usually only announce the dates when we open bookings. This is to ensure that everyone in the community has a fair chance of getting a space at one of our retreats. We announce any new retreats in our monthly newsletter and on social media, so be sure to sign up to the newsletter or follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to see the announcements. Or you can check the Events pages of the website.
We will reserve some places at each retreat for those on a bursary - please apply for the bursary by emailing the team before booking a place on the Events System when the event launches.
Unfortunately not every applicant will be accepted to the bursary scheme. If unsuccessful, you can try again for the next retreat providing you fit the criteria.
Once submitted, a member of the OMS Events Team will be in touch with you to discuss your application.
We believe that no one should be prevented from taking part in a retreat event due to constrained finances, so if you find yourself in that position but would still like to attend, and don't fit the criteria for this bursary (e.g. you are over 35 or don't live in the UK), please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and share details about your circumstances. We may be able to help you.
