Bending down and standing up safely and with good balance

Dr Gretchen gives her top tips for bending down safely

Bending down to pick or put something down can be challenging when you have MS.

Dr Gretchen shares her best techniques:

  • Wide feet: Wide stance, hips hinged backwards, shoulders forward and bend you knees as low as you can. Push through your thighs to stand back up.
  • Lunge: Put stronger leg forward, weaker leg back and keep feet wide. Drop back knee to pick up item and push through thighs to stand back up.

You can also use furniture to help your balance with both of these techniques.
