Oranges In Cinnamon and Nutmeg Syrup

This is a very simple dish that is fresh and light, a perfect way to end a dinner party with rich meals.

Serves 4
  • 4 orange large
  • 125 g caster sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp Cointreau or brandy, optional

Instructions

  1. Using a vegetable peeler, remover wide strips of zest from the oranges. 
  2. Peel the remaining oranges and slice the oranges crosswise. 
  3. Place the sugar, spices, peel and 150ml of water in a saucepan. 
  4. Gently heat until the sugar has dissolved. 
  5. Bring to the boil and simmer for five minutes. 
  6. Add the sliced oranges and the alcohol, if using.
  7. Let the oranges simmer in the syrup for about 10 minutes. 
  8. Serve warm
