Sugar plums

Deliciously sweet and spicy, this recipe for sugar plums will get you into the Christmas spirit.

  • 1.33 cups pitted dates roughly chopped
  • 0.66 cup dried apricots
  • 1 cup almonds toasted
  • 0.33 cup pistachios (raw)
  • 0.33 cup candied ginger
  • 2 tbsp orange zest
  • 2 tbsp orange juice or lemon juice or brandy
  • 1 coating demerara sugar


  1. Line a baking sheet with cooking paper.
  2. Place the dates, apricots, nuts, ginger and orange zest in a food processor and process until finely minced. Add the juice or brandy and process to blend.
  3. Shape the mixture into 1 – inch balls and roll in the sugar to coat evenly.
  4. Place on the prepared baking sheet and leave to air-dry until no longer sticky, 1–2 hours.
  5. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or freeze.
